A micromechanical-based model of stimulus responsive liquid crystal elastomers

چکیده
Stimulus responsive elastomers are advanced engineered materials that perform desired functionalities when triggered by external stimuli. Liquid crystal (LCEs) one important example exhibit reversible actuation cycled above and below their nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature. Here, we propose a micromechanical-based model is centered on the evolution of chain distribution tensor LCE network. Our model, framed within statistical network, enables mesoscale description mechanical response under an thermal stimulus. We compare to prior experimental observations bending 3D printed elements with controlled director alignment.

Biaxial liquid-crystal elastomers: a lattice model.
We present a simple coarse-grained lattice model for monodomain biaxial liquid-crystal elastomers and perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations in the proposed model system. Orientational ordering--uniaxial or biaxial--reflects in sample deformations on cooling the system. The simulation output is used to predict calorimetry data and deuterium magnetic resonance spectra.

Materials that change shape are attractive candidates to replace traditional actuators for applications with power or size restrictions. In this work, we design a polymeric bilayer that changes shape in response to both heat and water by the incorporation of a water-responsive hydrophilic polymer with a heat-responsive liquid crystal elastomer. The distinct shape changes based on stimulus are c...
متن کاملNonlocal model for nematic liquid-crystal elastomers.
We have developed a fully nonlocal model to describe the dynamic behavior of nematic liquid-crystal elastomers. The free energy, incorporating both elastic and nematic contributions, is a function of the material displacement vector and the orientational order parameter tensor. The free energy cost of spatial variations of these order parameters is taken into account through nonlocal interactio...
متن کاملLiquid Crystal Elastomers
PREFACE Liquid crystals are unusual materials. As their name suggests, they inhabit the grey area between liquids and solids. They have long range orientational order, typically of the unique axes of their component rod-like or plate molecules. Spatial variations of this average direction of molecular orientation are resisted by so-called curvature (Frank) elasticity. On the other hand liquid c...
متن کاملA microscopic lattice model for liquid crystal elastomers
We propose a simple coarse-grained lattice model for liquid crystal elastomers and show, through large scale Monte Carlo simulations, that it can reproduce stressstrain, order, light transmission, and other experiments, including temperature effects. We focus both on homogeneously and inhomogeneously crosslinked materials.
